The fruit of the author’s own journey toward his masculine maturity, this book draws on the mythology of Shiva to reveal the essence of mature masculinity. A dense, powerful guide for men seeking their deepest potential, and for women who wish to understand the men in their lives.

The Shiva Code:

The Spiritual Guide for Men

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A MAN TODAY?

The question is ancient. The man asking it has just walked out of a successful corporate career. The man who ought to answer is a Himalayan hermit, sitting outside a cave above the village of Tawaghat. The answer comes on the thirteenth dawn — and it takes a whole book to give.

Masculinity today is mistaken for machismo. Aggression, arrogance, a virility that never grew past adolescence: faced with that caricature, a great many men did the only thing that looked honourable. They shut their masculine nature away in the darkest recesses of the personality, often for life. The result is not a better man. It is half a man.

But there is another masculinity, and it does not need inventing — it needs remembering. Shiva, whom tradition places in India some seven thousand years ago, is not the warrior god the Western imagination expects. He is the man who protects without dominating, who grows angry only to repair what is unjust, who renounces without resentment and laughs for no reason at all. He is the Mature Masculine, fully embodied.

TWENTY-SEVEN ATTRIBUTES. ONE CHAPTER EACH.

Dr. Sujith Ravindran reassembles the code of Shiva attribute by attribute, and each one becomes a short, dense chapter:

  • fullness in oneself, which does not ask the world to complete it
  • the benevolent observer, the archetype that watches without judging
  • righteous anger, the energy that repairs what is wrong
  • protectiveness, a strength that is natural and never displayed
  • detachment from the outcomes that flatter the ego
  • playfulness, the light spirit that governs everything
  • authenticity, its highest expression

…and twenty more, from self-mastery to humility, from simplicity of heart to sacrifice for a legacy.

A COMPENDIUM, NOT AN INTELLECTUAL EXERCISE

The author is explicit: this is not a book to understand, it is a book to experience. “The higher being can never be fully possessed at a purely intellectual level.” Every attribute is drawn out of the mythology of Shiva and brought back to the daily life of a man today: his work, his father, his partner, his friends.

WHO THIS BOOK IS FOR

For men who sense they are living at a fraction of their potential and no longer know where their strength went. For women who want to understand the mature masculine essence hidden in the men of their lives. For those who work with men — coaches, therapists, facilitators, leaders of men’s circles.

Transformation begins with awareness. This book is where it begins.
