Autore: Dr. Sujith Ravindran

After fifteen years of corporate success, Dr. Sujith Ravindran fell into a spiritual crisis that led him to leave it all behind. Searching for what made Gandhi, Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr. and Lincoln legendary, he found it was not their capabilities but the inner state they acted from. This book retraces the path that took them there.

The BEING Leader:

Tracing the “Inner Path” of Legendary Leaders

WHAT MAKES A LEADER LEGENDARY?

Not their capabilities. It took Dr. Sujith Ravindran fifteen years to find that out, and he found it out by losing everything he had built.

He had risen through leadership roles in companies and start-ups across several continents, following the playbook of the leaders everyone held up as models. Then, after a decade and a half of success, he fell: a spiritual crisis, an emptiness no achievement could fill. He left his corporate life to go and find what was missing.

THE FOUR QUADRANTS

The answer he found is a model of disarming simplicity. Cross two axes — being, higher or lower, and action, present or absent — and you get four kinds of person:

  • those who do not act, from a lower being: the men who spend their days in a café blaming the world
  • those who live from a higher being but do not act in the world: Jesus, the Buddha
  • those who act a great deal from a lower being — and this is where the author places himself in the early 2000s
  • those who act in the world from a higher being: Gandhi, Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln

Only the fourth quadrant produces a Being Leader. And the difference is not what those four men could do. It is the inner state they acted from.

A JOURNEY IN THREE MOVEMENTS

The book reconstructs that journey through the four leaders’ lives, in the shape of a rite of passage:

DEPARTURE — Walking through fire. The ordeal none of them chose. The warrior child, the “I am not good enough”, the struggle with oneself.

PASSAGE — Practice and preparation. The labyrinth. The two selves in the mirror, disidentification, the unconditioned self. Making yourself small. Defeating the demon of the fear of death.

ARRIVAL — Being in mastery. Living by a noble creed, being led by your highest ideal, operating in the third person, acting consciously, accepting imperfection.

This is not leadership theory. It is the anatomy of a transformation, documented four times over.

WHO THIS BOOK IS FOR

For those who lead organisations, teams or causes, and sense that competence is no longer enough. For those who reached the top and found the emptiness waiting there. For those who work on people — coaches, facilitators, consultants, mentors.

The Being Leaders were unlikely heroes, who came from nowhere. The path they walked is still open.
